Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) are key NSDC bodies that align skill training with industry needs by developing National Occupational Standards and Qualification Packs, while ensuring quality and standardization across programs. They function as autonomous organizations involving industry, academia, and labor, operating across 40+ sectors with initial government support

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a unique Public–Private Partnership operating under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, dedicated to advancing skill development across India. Its primary objective is to promote the establishment of high-quality, scalable, for-profit vocational training institutions. NSDC provides funding support and builds strong support systems such as quality assurance frameworks, information platforms, and train-the-trainer academies, either directly or through strategic partnerships. Acting as a catalyst, NSDC enables, supports, and coordinates private sector initiatives while driving focused skill development across 21 key industry sectors to attract sustainable private investment.

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, was established on 27th May 2014 under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi to prioritize vocational training and skill development of India’s youth. Headed by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Ministry is responsible for coordinating skill development initiatives nationwide, reducing the gap between industry demand and skilled manpower supply, and strengthening vocational and technical training frameworks. MSDE focuses on large-scale, high-quality skill development to achieve its vision of a ‘Skilled India’, supported by its functional bodies including NSDA, NSDC, NSDF, 33 Sector Skill Councils, and a wide network of training partners, institutions, universities, industry bodies, and government agencies.

Skill India was launched on 15th July, observed as World Youth Skills Day, with the introduction of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), the flagship initiative of the Government of India. The campaign gained strong momentum through the National Skill India Mission and the revision of the National Skills Policy, bringing focused attention to vocational training and employability. The revised policy addresses the critical gap between the growing industry demand for skilled manpower and the limited supply, while promoting large-scale, quality skill development aligned with current and future job roles.

Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) are one of the key pillars of NSDC, playing a vital role in bridging the gap between industry requirements and the curriculum delivered through skill development programs. SSCs contribute significantly to the development of National Occupational Standards (NOS) and Qualification Packs (QPs) across various sectors and trades, while also ensuring quality and standardization of programs implemented under NSDC and MSME. Functioning as autonomous national partnership bodies, SSCs bring together industry, academia, and labor stakeholders. Initially funded by the government, there are currently around 40 SSCs operating across different domains, trades, and sectors.
